How To Manage Data More Efficiently
By Ravi Namboori
Have you any idea as to how much of our primary data is properly organized? I did not until I chanced upon an article very recently that told me that only 15 to 20% of the data we store is structured and the rest is not!
Most of the unstructured data is reportedly old or obsolete data. Also, most data on our computers is not in any way related to our work as of date. Data does not suddenly explode instantly. It is accrued over time, and we do not keep track of it.
Another problem with data explosion is that copies of data get multiplied in our workplace. For every one file created, 10 plus or more copies of it are reproduced. This, in turn, leads to shrinkage of our storage space. We, therefore, need to keep in check proliferation of data. If not, we could end up losing control of our own database.
Let us see how data can be managed more efficiently.
The first step should be archiving. Yes, you read it right. We archive data by sourcing, tagging, and adding in new data sets by placing stubs behind them. If a blanket rule is enforced across the board in our environment that one must start placing a stub behind every file that we have not seen for over 3-4 months, it would bring about a major change.
We would logically transfer the obsolete data to a secure and a solid platform in order to retain it and for retrieving whenever we need. This makes a lot of business sense.
After all, data management is a very crucial issue that needs to be addressed on a priority basis. With surge in data, it becomes more challenging for us to. One instance of data archiving based on a single criterion would get rid of data from the data protection path and every workflow. As our space to work on is increased, it will have a domino effect on the performance of almost our entire file systems. This will lead to occupation of less space, resulting in less time being wasted.
When data is less, we will be obviously able to manage better. In other words, quantity and size of data lead to reduction of management burdens. Therefore, our database will become constricted.
If we start archiving on a permanent basis with the aid of copy data management, most of our data management challenges can be overcome.
This article about data management discusses on how it is possible for us to manage our data better. This has been written keeping the problem of data explosion that is on the verge of becoming a menace.
